Klingspor Museum and the Haus der Stadtgeschichte Quo vadis? Printing discovering its future25 – 27 May 2023 (dates unchanged) As many of you will remember, because of the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020, the Klingspor Museum had to cancel the AEPM conference which it had organised. A large part of the programme took place the following year—but ‘only’ online, Covid oblige—thus depriving us of the pleasure of discovering its extremely rich collections, as well as those of its co-organiser, the Haus der Stadtgeschichte (Local History Museum), also in Offenbach. This year, the Klingspor Museum has stepped into the breach to ensure that the 2023 conference will take place, in collaboration again with the Haus der Stadtgeschichte and with additional support from the Friends of the Klingspor Museum. The programme will be close to that which was originally planned for this year and will offer an excellent opportunity to—at last—discover first hand the collections and activities of the Klingspor Museum, the Haus der Stadtgeschichte and their new printmaking workshop. And of course, as ever, it will bring together people from a wide range of printing museums and other graphic heritage organisations, colleagues and friends old and new, to discuss print and printing past and present. Full details of the programme will be posted soon, so watch this space! Online registration: HERE |

After a quarter of a century, ATypI returns to Antwerp for our 2018 annual conference. Belgium’s most populous city proper has a rich cultural history spanning centuries. It has played an important role in art, politics, and religion, and, more specifically, in the development of western typography. Antwerp is the home of the Plantin-Moretus Museum, a unique institution which, in 2005, was awarded the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides housing the two oldest surviving printing presses in the world, an exceptional collection of typographic material, and an extensive library, the preservation of its entire commercial archives give an unprecedented insight in the business of book printing and typefounding since the sixteenth century. to edit. The theme of ATypI’s 2018 conference is Type Legacies: honouring the heritage, designing type today. By honouring our heritage, we reflect on the rich tradition of type to gain insights into the contemporary practice and inspire the future. A deep understanding of typographic history guides us when we design and educate, when we draw and code, when we develop fonts destined for today and tomorrow. What came before becomes the foundation for our present realities and the inspiration for future possibilities. Principles from classical calligraphy can be applied to feature-rich fonts. Renaissance type making can be echoed in the proportions and metrics of contemporary fonts. And the superlative accomplishments of Plantin’s polyglot Bible of the sixteenth century can inform multi-language, multi-script solutions for increasingly globalised communities.
It is in this spirit of comprehension and inclusion that the ATypI 2018 conference invites designers, typographers, type designers, and type enthusiasts worldwide to celebrate Type Legacies in Antwerp this September. |

Information Design provides citizens, business and government with a means of presenting and interacting with complex information. It embraces applications from wayfinding and map reading to forms design; from website and screen layout to instruction. Done well it can communicate across languages and cultures, convey complicated instructions, even change behaviours. Information Design offers an authoritative guide to this important multidisciplinary subject. The book weaves design theory and methods with case studies of professional practice from leading information designers across the world. The heavily illustrated text is rigorous yet readable and offers a single, must-have, reference to anyone interested in information design or any of its related disciplines such as interaction design and information architecture, information graphics, document design, universal design, service design, map-making and wayfinding. web |

GRANSHAN 2015 Conference
Thursday to Saturday, 23–25 July 2015 Granshan celebrates the diversity and richness of the typographic scripts that underpin global communication, empower communities, and enables identity. The annual Granshan conference is about typeface design and typography for familiar and unfamiliar scripts, for readable and elusive languages, and for design challenges that combine deep history and unmarked territories where innovation is the only way forward. This July we are expanding the format to take advantage of our location in the University of Reading, the hub of research and practice in typeface design for global scripts. The theme of the conference is “Global design in practice”. Our programme is developed around the idea of type for real typographic applications, and design for evolving document genres. |
